In the latter part of this century, dentistry and its branches including Periodontology have seen a robust growth and increase in available scientiic knowledge. Our attempt is to write a simpliied, concise but comprehensive book, which will be equally useful for beginners as well as clinicians.

Books are hardly written from vacuum, and so, is this one. It is the derivation of the editors and authors from what they had read and understood, the inluences of their peers and a relection of their experiences.

We humbly accept that this is also no different. We wished this book to be subjective, but the need of the students has become objective, especially at examinations to present their knowledge and understanding in order of consecutive points. It made us redirect our book towards objectivity. Throughout the book, we have made it a point to maintain a simple and lucid style with illustrations: diagrams, images and lowcharts to assist learning, enable memorizing and simplify its reproduction during examinations and eventually into their clinical practice.

In our view, no scientiic output or publication should be dogmatically considered loftier beyond the arena of critical questioning. Liberating yourself from such implied muzzling, we will be happy if you would point the shortcomings, and show us the areas for improvement, which will be corrected in the subsequent editions.

We thank Almighty with sincerity and humility for everything good and worthwhile in our lives. We thank our parents for guiding, helping and supporting us right from the baby trials of holding a pen until today.

We thank our families and friends for their support and for patiently bearing with us the loss of precious quality lifetime while we were busy with this book. We thank our teachers, mentors and students for helping us understand the subject better.
